Be My Valentine…

Yes, it’s that time of the year again, where your love and affection is determined by how much you spend on roses, chokies, and red gift cards.

It can be very stressful, as this is an annual thing that somehow needs to be out-performed each time the calendar shows February the 14th.

Well, don’t worry, you are reading the blog that will help you maintain your” In relationship” status.

But first, some history: (knowledge is power, you’ll get a chance to impress)

Like every great story Valentine’s Day origins are vague and shrouded in mystery. The day does celebrate a St. Valentine, a martyr that was executed by the roman emperor Claudius II, on the 14th day of February, but apparently there were at least two Valentines (some say more, I guess it was a common enough name back then) one buried outside the city walls, the other had a rather complicated relationship with the emperor’s jailer’s daughter…

Moving swiftly along…

The original connection to the festive of love is credited to Geoffrey Chaucer, author of The Canterbury Tales. In his poem “Parlement of Foules,” from circa 1381, he inspired lovers everywhere with these words, in which he connects the day to the widespread belief of the time that February 14 was the start of the mating season for birds:

“For this was on seynt Volantynys day

Whan euery bryd cometh there to chese his make.”

(Word lit up in red over this quote…)
